Purple sprouting broccoli.
Hi i was given some PSB last year. they are now producing well but i was wondering how long the plants last? do they need to be dug up when they have finished or do they last for a few years? many thanks.

Hi Emma,

Purple Sprouting is planted fresh each year, so get rid of the plants when they've finished flowering. If you bash up the stalks a bit before you put them in the compost heap they'll decompose more quickly.

If you want some psb for next year you need to get planting now - or buy some plants from the garden centre.

Happy growing!

Re: Purple sprouting broccoli...Again!
Hi, after my P.S.B sprouted in early March I decided to plant some more this year. I planted out in May 2012 and now in July some have started sprouting already. Has this happened to anyone else? Not sure if its the weather or whether I've mistakenly planted an early flowering variety by mistake.?( if their is one?)

That is very unusual - it should be a strict biennial - starts one year and flowers the next. Perhaps it's just confused about the weather - it's wouldn't be the only one. Mine is just growing away as usual (so far!)

The other possibility is that it is a calabrese-type broccoli, which I think does germinate and flower the same year.

I'm been having the same trouble with my flat-leaved parsley - quite a lot of it has flowered - I don't know whether to just cut the flowers in the hope that it will continue to produce leaves or just pull it out.

Well it lost interest in sprouting, flowered and then was decimated by caterpillars! What a rotten year its been for veg growing!

I have had to re-register as I forgot my old details!

It really has been a very difficult year. If I were just starting out I would definitely be put off.

Someone was telling me all their kale went to seed as well. Not to mention blight.

.. and the rats eat all my peas!

Apparently there is a variety of P.S called Rudoph which can start spouting in the autumn or winter. I might even try some .....

When I went up to my allotment on Christmas eve, I found cabbage white catapillars on my cabbages, which has to be a record. They were still there last week, but I think they may have gone to that great cabbage field in the sky by now.
